Warning: This post is about poop.
Sorry…..but it was the topic of the day and so it’s the only thing I have to write about! Nothing is sacred anymore…maybe all of you would sign non-disclosure agreements? Ha. Lisa brought me this book today. I stayed in bed all day not feeling great and was pretty sure I wouldn’t have a bowel movement….it’s been almost 2 weeks. I’ve been on pain killers for so long I was horribly constipated even before my surgery! I felt like I was about to die. I couldn’t eat either. The doctor said if it didn’t happen today I would have to go back in the hospital tomorrow. Guess what? I pooped. It was the scariest hour of my life, I cried and cried and I hope to never go through anything like it again. I called my mom (she was at Target) and she yelled in excitement to the entire store: She pooped! She POOPED!!
The silver lining? It made me feel so great I was able to get up and shower. I put on a little makeup and I rode with my mom to Boo’s school (only a 1/4 mile) to pick her up. I wanted Boo to see me looking normal for once. The second I got to the playground Boo and all her friends gathered around wanting to see my “Frankenstein” costume (that’s what I told Boo my stomach was and I guess she talks about it a lot).
I’m trying to get back to blogging more often…..it’s just really awkward to avoid my stomach. I can see things getting back to “normal” soon! Lisa and the gals have kept everything at LBB moving forward and my friends and family have taken care of everything else. All of you have kept me so uplifted and I promise I read each and every comment! Thank you! Love to you all!

Oh goodness, I haven’t kept up with reading lately (I am a follower, just a quiet one) so I’m sorry I don’t know what put you in this predicament, but jeeez! That’s a long time not to poop! I did giggle though b/c we have read that book SO many times in my house! My son has had issues with pooping since he was 1 (now almost 4) so we have tried everything to get him to go. All cards on the table, right? ! So happy for you. Can’t imagine what that must have been like. You are brave to share your experience and there are many who can relate in one way or another! Hope you get back to 100% soon!

These little things we used to take for granted become such a big deal when they mean your body is getting back to normal! I know that book and it is pretty funny. Especially the part about the camel . . . but it is true, if you eat you poop, and doing both is part of having a healthy body. Another little milestone you have achieved in your recovery!
Brittany says
Hooray for poop! Once it took me 3 weeks. After I had gallbladder surgery! I hope things get better for you soon. I have been thinking about you!

YAHOO FOR POOP!!
Melissa says
My mom was a nurse so I have lived my whole life hearing way to much about poop and gauging poop as a health measurement. Your bowel movement is a great thing! Congrats!
Heidi says
LOL! Whenever I have had trouble after surgery/deliveries, my hubby always says “good job, honey!!” as if I just finished a marathon!!! YAY! This nurse thinks it IS a big deal!

Woohoo for pooping Ashley!!! So glad it made you feel better =). And I seriously can’t believe you already left the house… are you not in a lot of pain with that big scar? You truly are a hero, girl!!!!

Monika says
E is still awake, she’s been reading your blog and rooting for you like crazy. Anyways, I went in her room, did a little victory dance while chanting “Ashley pooped, Ashley pooped”. It took her a second to catch on, then she said “She seriously blogged about pooping? Only Ashley can get away with that”, then she grabbed her iphone to read for herself =D.
Perry says
Do apples poop? Don’t “get” the apple on the book cover? haha If apples do poop, i won’t be eating them anymore! I saw shrimp poop once and that was the end of them!
Holly says
Ashley, I’ve been reading your blog for over a year (not sure if I’d be considered an admirer or stalker! Ha!) You have been very inspirational to me- in your creativity, your mothering, and your successful business. You have been so generous in sharing tips for success, tutorials, and an honest look into your world. I’ve been reading in absolute amazement about your recent health issues. Wow. You have the most positive outlook. You are strong. You are funny. You are amazing. I think I might crumble into a puddle of mush- I can only hope I would handle everything like you have. I know we don’t know each other but I am cheering for you and praying for you and your family. Oh, and I just might giggle a little over your ‘poo’ story!
Dalia says
It’s the little things we take for granted that makes the BIGGEST difference!! So happy you pooped!! Rooting & praying for you!! Hugs & Blessings!!
Susan says
Yay for poop! I can relate to the not pooping for a while thing and boy when it finally happens….yikes! It should be smooth sailing now though… sleep like a rock tonight 🙂
Rochelle says
I totally get the excitement over pooping! I just had a c/s and hadn’t pooped in over a week – not quite your two weeks – and I was terrified for the moment that it’d happen. With weakened muscles and a week of pain killers I get it. I remember praying and praying the whole time to help me get through it. Pooping!? Who would’ve thought a person would have to pray to get through it? This is probably way TMI, but years ago I worked and lived in the mountains for weeks at a time. We went to the bathroom outdoors, of course. They always said that it’s the more natural way to go, and easier too. So, if your next #2 moment feels like it’ll be a doosy, get in your bathtub and squat, it’s much easier on your body that way. Easier on your stomach muscles, a better “path” out, etc. Then, of course, make sure to wash the tarnations out of the tub afterwards and don’t tell anyone what you just did.
Simone says
Sweeeeetttt poop! I’ve had the poop celebration before as well. Yay Ashley! On the road to regular! You’re strength and joy shine thru even whe you are on the potty. xoxo
Lindsay says
Leave it to a post about poop to bring me, a long-time lurker, out of the closet. 🙂 I just wanted to tell you that I have really enjoyed your posts about your recent medical scare. You are the only person I know who sounds like they handle pretty daunting situations like myself and you explained why so well on your last post. Sometimes I find myself wondering if there is something wrong in my brain – if I am lacking some sort of emotional synapse or something because I truly feel the way that you do when tough circumstances arise – so imagine my giddiness when reading your post and thinking “Hey! I’m not crazy after all!!” Well, either that or we BOTH lack that emotional synapse! 🙂
Anyway, I am glad you pooped….I have gone close to 2 weeks without a couple times too, so I realize what a HUGE (pardon the pun) accomplishment it is!! And I am so glad that you are doing okay and have such a wonderful support system. As you know, God will take care of you and will not bring anything you can’t bear. Obviously He thinks you’re one tough cookie.
Hang in there –
Lindsay

Yay for poop! I was in a very bad accident 8 years ago and lived in a hospital bed for about 3 months. I will never forget the day I pooped. It took me about 2 weeks too and boy was it miserable. I am so happy that you feel a little bit better. Thank you for keeping us updated, I have been checking your blog multiple times a day to see how you are doing. Hope you have a wonderful night.
Linda says
Yay, Ashley, I’m happy for your success today. I’m glad you didn’t include photos, though – lol. How funny that your mom announced it to everyone. Yay,Mom! You’re on your way back to normal. Each day will be better.

Didn’t think you could ever “top” the butt blog – just sayin’…
I should have known better than to under-estimate you! 🙂 Congratulations on your BM!! (Did I EVER think I’d leave an online comment saying that?)
Glad you are on the road to recovery – baby steps, baby steps.
Alida says
The only thing weirder than writing a blog post about poop? Probably reading a bunch of “congratulations on your poop” comments! But I am going to congratulate you anyway. I know how awful it can be to be that backed up, but considering you just had major surgery I imagine it was really painful. Ok…full disclosure…after reading about your poop troubles I prayed for your poop situation. God is GOOD!
June K says
Ashley, I can’t believe I am typing this on the internet but here it goes. I’m so glad “you pooped” and will not be going back to the hospital. And most of all I’m glad it gave you a little more energy to go with your mom to pick up Boo. Thinking of you…. hugs.
Tracie @cleverlyinspired says
Oh so happy:) I would have been scared s**t less. Pun intended. So glad you got a bit of energy back too!!!! Praying for your strength!!
Caroline says
Ah no parent was ever afraid of a little poop talk dear. Just glad you are feeling better and hoping everyday will be better so that you can be the mommy Boo knows
jane perillo says
awww Ashley, everytime I read your posts I’m brought to tears, this may be tears from laughing but tears still! No, really, I do know the waiting to poop bit, my niece was in the hospital last Christmas for several weeks (perforated intestines) it was horrible and just 2 days before Christmas she finally pooped and could go home. It was great!! Celebrating poop has become a tradition so this just fits right in.
And know that as you transition to “normal” we do know the pain behind it, the grief that can come in waves. I definitely understand the need to take control of what you can, just know that prayers continue for you (peace, healing, comfort)
Debbie says
Yeah!!!! I understand poop. With a little boy w/diet controlled acid reflux disease. We watch poops carefully and have for 6 years. 🙂
jordon says
Hi Ashley, I just recently was told about your illness and came to read your story. Reading all the details I was so overwhelmed by all you’ve been through. I’ve always admired how you’ve handled yourself on-line and to be so positive and strong through this time just cements what a wonderful person you are. I wish you a speedy recovery and will continue stopping in to check on your progress! Lots of love~Jordon
Amanda says
Yay! Trust me, I know how exciting poop can be after something so traumatic. Hurray for poop! I am so glad that things are settling back down at the moment. Picking up Boo must have been amazing, huh? Praying for your continued healing and recovery. Loves!
Evelyn says
He he he. After 2 c-sections that is all they talk about too. Glad you “passed” with flying colors…. That made me giggle… It won’t be “normal” like before ever, but you can make a new normal and in time you will come to think anything else is weird. Blessings to you.
sewcandid says
Poop…what a funny word! I feel the need to search for that book now…haha! Just so I can see what it all entails. When I had surgery for endometriosis my doctor was very concerned about poop and gave me some stern lectures on the subject, lol! Those pain killers are terrible at constipating a person, ugh! SO happy that you were feeling good enough to see your baby girl at school and just get out of bed for a bit. I’m sure it probably hurt just a bit to call your tummy Frankenstein even though the kiddo’s don’t quite understand it at all ); Keep your head up girly and as Joe Dirt would say “Keep on, keeping on.” I am continueing to pray for you and your family.
Cecilia says
One step forward to complete recovery… Sin prisa y sin pausa!
Hoorray for the poop!
Jen Spilker says
Yay! So happy that you were feeling well enough to go get Boo. I’m sure that went a long way to reassure her. Congrats on pooping! I think many of us have been in those shoes…
Shay says
i think when you have children nothing becomes sacred anymore! hahah! but i’m so happy that you pooped!
i remember after i had my son i couldn’t poop for 2 weeks as well, i was on pain meds from having a tubal ligation done and when i finally pooped i thought i was going to die a slow and painful death right there on that toilet.
you deserve a big ol trophy for that! =)
Kaite says
Congrats! I know that is a big step after having surgery. Glad you are slowly feeling back to normal.
Pam says
Ashley that’s wonderful news YAY! I so know what you mean about Boo seeing you looking normal. I think that was one of the worst parts about being sick having to see my girls faces when they saw me in the hospital or when I couldn’t even get out of bed when I got home. I’m glad that she is talking about it. Remember little steps.
Love and hugs
Jennifer says
Happy to hear you got out of the house – so important to do!

Yay!!! You pooped!!! Hope everything goes smoothly from here on out!! Tee hee! I hear ya on the pain med/constipation thing. Can’t believe you’re up and heading to the school! Good for you! God speed on your healing and wellness. You are an inspiration.
Teresa V says
I know from experience how important poop is. I have Lupus with chronic daily migraines . Without pain Medication most times it’s hard to get up. With pain Meds you can’t poop. Stool softeners work great.
I pray for you often Ashley. As a Mother we worry so much about how everyone else is feeling about what your going through. Especially our babies. Sometimes we are allowed to worry about and put ourself first. If you don’t take care of you, everything else can’t get taken care of. I thank God everyday that I have a wonderful Husband. If I can’t get out of bed he is right there to pull my weight with no resentment only love. I know Mr. LBB is the same way with you.
When I read your story about someone going home alone it’s so sad. I could never gave made it through my illness with my family.
Jennifer says
So glad for you Ashley! My daughter suffered severe constipation for over a year where she had 30 days worth of poop enlarging and backing up her colon. It’s been a few years since we’ve figured out the dietary changes we needed to make to fix her. But still I celebrate EVERY day when that girl goes potty! She comes out and tells me and we’re getting to the age where I think maybe I need to tell her not to tell me that if there are people here! But it is still exciting every day because it means we are still on the right track! 🙂 Love your posts! Keep up the good work!
Clare says
Had to laugh at this post. Unfortunately due to past medical experiences of my own, I know the side effects of painkillers & abdominal surgery myself. Don’t you feel like you are a little back toy your normal self now!? Sometimes it is the smallest things that make the difference. Keep up the positive outlook on everything that lies ahead. Positivity & determination definitely help in the fight!
Beth says
Congratulations! My girls have that book too (given to them by Crazy Uncle Steve)…Sounds like it was highly motivating! Let everyone keep helping you. You are blessing them by accepting their help.

My thoughts & prayers are with you. You are so brave to share your story and the pic’s. I’m sure that Brett, Boo & the rest of your family are so glad to have you home, I know it was scary! Oh my goodness Ashley!!!! I hadn’t read the blog for a couple weeks and clicked on today’s post from facebook and was in SHOCK to hear your news!! You are such a sport, girl, and such a fighter!!! I’ll add you to my prayer list and be thinking of you often!!
michelle says
Yay!!!! What a BIG girl your are now :D)). Seriously, that is one of the scariest things ever after u haven’t done it in a while. You know it’s gonna hurt, and you have been in pain in every other part of your body; for what feels like an eternity I am sure. Try not to worry about your belly, your beautiful. And, the way you start new trends…..it could become one of the coolest tattoos to have stamped on your stomach. Good Luck, and I envy your positive attitude through all of this. Take care. P.s. As for Boo I am sure she is just pleased to have you, make up or not.

Courtney says
Glad you pooped! I agree, that first one after surgery is SCARY! I’m surprised they discharged you at all without a BM, it was always a criteria before my docs would let me leave.
Rory says
Yay for you! This reminds me of when I had my c-sections and you can’t have anything but liquids to eat until you pass gas. I have never been so happy to “toot my horn” in my life so I could get some real food!
Jennifer Dawn says
With a newborn in the house and a potty training toddler, POOP has been a big topic of conversation for us too. My husband’s recent mantra has been, “Poop happens”. I’m glad poop happened for you–literally. Tee hee. I’m not glad that you have had such an ordeal lately. Ordeal doesn’t even seem the right word for it. What a beautiful spirit you have! You have such a positive outlook for the future. In times of trial, God gives us a peace and strength that passes all understanding. I know God is in your corner–working this for a greater good. Prayers and love being sent your way! You are truly an inspiration!
Jenni says
So glad for you! Getting a shower too, what a great feeling that is. PLEASE give yourself the freedom to NOT blog for awhile if you don’t feel like it. You have been through A LOT the blogosphere will understand:).

My prayers are with you. I have had two molar pregnancies and know the path you are on right now. It was so nice to have my family so supportive and it makes all the difference. Know that my thoughts are with you!
Marcella says
Yay for poops.
I remember after my c-section I was soooooooooo constipated and gassy. It was horrible. When it finally happened, I literally CRIED like a baby through the whole thing. I remember it like it was yesterday, because I prayed and begged God that I would never go thorugh that again. I did feel a lot better after the doo was done.
P.S. – I’m loving the book idea as a gift. I bet Lisa did a little giggle on the inside when she thought of bringing it to you.
sara says
two weeks?!?! you poor thing! that is TERRIBLE … yay for poop! I bet you feel like a new person! 🙂

Way to go Ashley. I could just feel your excitement from your post. God is with you all the time even with our bathroom needs. TEE HEE I am so glad you are feeling at least a little better and I know Boo was excited to see you. I had viral menengitis 2 years ago, which is nothing like you are going through, but it knocked me on my tush for over a month and every little step I took to recovery my 3 girls and hubby were cheering me own, just like Boo and your family is doing. Just don’t try to do to much to quick, which I know is hard. Enjoy the love and support you are getting from everybody and remember God has big plans for you missy. Continue to keep you in my prayers and lifting your healing up to the Lord
Jennifer says
WOOHOO! My son’s preschool teacher read this last week to her class of 9 boys. Brave teacher as are you! You and your family have been in our prayers and continue to be so. Baby steps!! It’s crazy what we get excited over sometimes, huh? Glad you’re making those baby steps and slowly getting back to ‘normal’ … but don’t rush it!

I recently went through week of the same thing. It was unbelievably painful and laughably ridiculous all at the same time. I could not imagine another day, much less another week. You are an amazing trooper, and we are all so proud of you. I’d absolutely LOVE to take on a project or donation effort on your behalf, and I think others in the blog creative world would as well. Will send an email to Lisa. xoxox

I’m so glad it finally happened! I’ve been there before with the VERY painful post-pain-meds, post-anesthesia poop. It is horrendous to go through, but hopefully you can get back on track now. Do they have you on stool softeners, I hope?
Cammie says
Yay for poop! I’ve had those problems before too following abdominal surgeries (I’ve had 4). I’ve been there crying in the bathroom for an hour…or more…and the end result, even though you are tired as all get out, you feel SO much better! Glad you didn’t have to go back to the hospital for relief. Praying for your continued recovery-and ability to poop! Take care, and know there is a ton of us out here sending happy thoughts and prayers to you.
Heather H says
Glad you didn’t have to go back to the hospital. I understand how it is. After my c-section I didn’t have a bm for 7 days and I should have but no one told me to continue talking softeners….when I finally was able to go it was horrific and not at all fun…Even though I was still recovering I stopped taking the pain meds…it just wasn’t worth going through that again. hehe I hope your recovery is swift and without anymore…blockages. heh
MD says
I just wanted to say that everyone does poop and I don’t know why everyone has to be sooo squeamish about it. On that note, two things… One – My cousin and I and my sister and I discuss pooping regularly. My cousin calls and texts to tell me about it often. Two – when I was pregnant with my first child (well both pregnancies sucked and I had these issues but this story is about the first one – LOL) I had some issues that made me seriously constipated. I know that happens when women are pregnant but it was way worse than normal. Anyhow, one day, I basically birthed the poop in the shower because that is the only way I could do it. Sitting was not working with me. It took like an hour to for the actual process. I feel your pain. I hope it gets better!
Karonm says
Ashley – As surgical nurse for many years – my best advice drink small can of prune juice ,followed by cup of warm water – THEN drink Starbucks sumatra coffee — will be PRODUCTIVE with out stress . I have to comment on this one because I remember the pain I went through to poop after my daughter was born. The horror, yet relief, I felt! Hurrah. Definitely worth a congratulatory comment. 🙂

Hey Ashley,
I know it is odd to say this, but so glad to hear of your accomplishment today!! It must have been terrible. But that is definitely a sign of progress and healing. Each day at a time. Keep your spirit up! Healthy mind, healthy body. While that is easy to say at a time like this I know it is hard to follow. But keep your spirit flying high and healthy and your body will follow for sure. I just know it in my heart. Hugs and Kisses

MMm… at some point I remember watching a Japanese cartoon about a poo on the side of the road that I think fell off a cart with other ones. Wish I knew the name of it so you could watch it. So glad you are on the mend!
Dana says
The first poop is the hardest! Love you can blog about it! Keep up the good spirits! You make me smile!

Congratulations! It means you are healing. I had a hysterectomy a couple years ago so I feel your pain. I didn’t have trouble with pooping, it was the peeing that I couldn’t do. Both are underrated actions.

Dearest Ashley, I’ve only responded a few times, but I have to say, I love you. I had a hysterectomy in March. My Facebook buddies had a pretty good laugh at my expense over the very same event.
You have been through so much these last few months. As have I. I wish you the very best and pray for you always.

I know this is related to your problem and if you ever have the Poopie/Non Poopie problem again you need to try a bite or so of canned pumpkin. I know it sounds sick-o,but when our family dog had surgery n had the same problem the vet said ‘canned pumpkin’ will soften your stools and help you go…Just add this quirk or advice to the mountains of it you’ve received. I apparently haven’t read your mail/blog for eons and am sorry for your health issues. Hope everything works out well for you and your family.

You are a riot, I find myself thinking of you all the time (don’t be freaked out). But i can be walking in Walmart, driving and I stop and think of you and what you’re going through and how awesome you are handling it. ROCK EFFIN STAR!

My daughter tried reading and translating that book to her German Aunt-in-law if there is such a term ! She read it during Thanksgiving one year and I do believe it was the Turkey Day hit…She tries gesturing with her hands what was going on in the book. Very, very funny as she did it.
By now you’ve become quite regular by now,but if your problem ever happens again, try eating a spoonful of canned pumpkin. I know it sounds sick, but our dog got hit by a car and had surgery and with her medication she too became bound up as they say. We even had to carry her outside to go since she had a broken hip and couldn’t walk very well. The pains we go thru for our animals 😉
Take car and God bless.

This article made me crack up (haha). This past year I had to undergo an emergency surgery that resulted in losing a section of my colon and having a colostomy placed.(odd for a 20 yr old and mother of a 1 month old). The first bowel movement is so unbearable! I definitely understand your “one hour of hell”. You definitely appreciate the simple things in life, such as using the bathroom. The second surgery was even worse. I also understand your “frankenstein” costume as well- I had a pillow strapped to my stomach for two weeks after both surgeries even laughing would spit my stomach. You’re an inspiring woman and I love all of your humor! Prayers for you and your family!
