Warning: another scary photo of my stomach in this post.
Yesterday, Brett and I woke up at the crack of dawn and drove to Loma Linda for a post op appointment and another round of chemotherapy.
The desert is gorgeous at sunrise and you can see the windmills in the background too….it’s a peaceful drive.
First, Dr. R removed my staples and then I got my chemo shots:
My battle scar! It’s looking much better……and I still have a belly button (it was hiding under the staples)! It’s about a half inch off center now. The smaller incision was from the laparoscopy. The incision itself doesn’t hurt but it just feels like they took a baseball bat to every organ on the inside. I was in a deep sleep…..so maybe they did:
We weren’t able to get the blood results from yesterday until this morning……but it was the best phone call ever. My HCG levels are at 7,800…..they were at 17,000 right before my first chemotherapy injections. Before my hysterectomy they were 123,000. What does this mean? It means the chemotherapy is working.
Two months ago I’d never even heard of a molar pregnancy but that’s how all of this started. My family and I learn something new about it every day. Basically, a molar pregnancy results from over-production of the tissue that is supposed to develop into the placenta. The placenta normally feeds a fetus during pregnancy….but in my case it was feeding a tumor. The tumor became invasive and grew through the wall of my uterus which is what eventually caused the uncontrollable pelvic bleeding. I’m still in shock that I had a 4″ x 6″ tumor in my uterus…..but I think I’m even more in shock at how quickly it was able to metastasize to my lungs and liver. The good news is that these cancerous cells are very responsive to chemotherapy. I’ll continue chemotherapy until my HCG levels come down to zero and remain at zero for three consecutive treatments. Then I’ll have another CT scan to see if the spots on my lung and liver have gone away (because we are assuming those spots are from the molar pregnancy).
The biggest challenge right now is keeping weight on. I haven’t wanted a donut in weeks. Since my body thought it was pregnant, I weighed 158 when I was in the hospital. I’ve lost about 15 pounds since then. I’ve been mostly successful eating small bits of sourdough bread dipped in balsamic vinegar. I still don’t know what symptoms are from surgery and what is from chemo. I guess I’ll start figuring that out in the next few weeks. Highlight of the day yesterday: I sat at my computer for the first time in a few weeks!
My mom leaves tomorrow. So sad. She’s been such an great help this past week…..cleaning, grocery shopping, picking Boo up from school and getting her ready for bed……not to mention waiting on me hand and foot. So many friends have been bringing meals to help out which has been amazing.
My father-in-law is my angel. He has coordinated care and chemotherapy here in the desert at the Lucy Curci Center so we won’t have to drive to Loma Linda anymore. It will make things much more manageable over the next few weeks.
Now all I can think about are things I want to make. My list is getting longer by the day. I feel like I have 3 moms here: my mom, Lisa and Gicela. Anytime I get up and try to make something they say I’m overdoing it…..and usually they are right….but I’m so bored.
Thank you for your continued prayers everyone.
Im thrilled about your lab report. You’re the most inspiring person i’ve never met, LOL. Continue to heal!!
Ashley,
I am praying this round of chemo will bring your numbers down to zero and it will stay at zero. I also praying those spots in your lungs are gone as well.
Vanessa
I was waiting on pins and needles waiting for such an update, I am so relived to hear that the chemo is working xoxo Mere
Amazing! I am so glad that it’s working!!
Awesome news!!! Still praying you receive nothing but great news in the future:)
praise God! you are so blessed! so glad to read that the chemotherapy is working..
I feel so silly getting excited just to “hear” you. 🙂 I’m glad your counts are down and I know they will continue to drop! That sourdough bread sounds delish right now. I wonder if the donut cravings relate directly to the uterus… I wouldn’t be surprised a bit!
God bless you! How good is He. Been praying for you. I even shared you with my BFF who recently had a hysterectomy this year. She is only 26. Hers was a result of endometriosis. It was encouraging to her to know that she isn’t the only young(er) mother out there having hysterectomies long before she should be hitting menopause.
I’m so happy to hear you’re doing well! Fantastic news on the blood work. Your “moms” are right, take it easy! Maybe you can smear some peanut butter on that sourdough and get some protein down. Maybe try some Ensure or something similar to get your calories up — 15 lbs is a lot in a short time! Keep feeling better and I’m sending happy thoughts your direction. 🙂
Wonderful news! Battle on girlfriend!
Delighted for you! An answered prayer indeed!
Looking forward to seeing what your inspiration leads to but please babysteps first! Don’t over do it, however tempting it might seem when you are bouyed by good news, it’ll just come back to bite you on your already delicate bum!
Take very good care x
God Is good! Continued prayers for the chemo to keep working! Your positive attitude is inspiring!
Hallelujah, Ashley! God is Good!!! I’m so happy to hear that the chemo is working! You really needed some good news! Have you been able to do any art journaling while in bed? Do you have a lap desk (the table kind that kids use) ? That might allow you to be somewhat creative. Also, didn’t you learn to crochet? That’s something you can do while lying down too, isn’t it? I was never successful at crochet, so I don’t know. Anyway, glad the chemo is working, and with the staples gone, you’ll feel a lot better!
I am so glad to hear that it is working. God is good that is for sure……………xoxo Glenda
So glad to hear this! I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
So very thankful for this report. Tears in my eyes and happiness in my heart for prayers being answered for you today.
Still praying for your strength…so glad to see things are slowly working out.

My friend is an exceptional ob-gyn and I asked all kinds of ???. She assured me that though rare, this is a cancer that responds so well to chemo and she felt you would be fine. She said this was one of the 1st cancers to respond to chemo! I was just waiting to hear some good news and I know hearing your blood report will speed your recovery. Take care and I will continue to read the updates. My husband is an avid golfer and he enjoyed reading about your father as he had heard of him from a friend!
Great news, am still praying for continued strength and numbers to keep going down. Don’t over do, but I know what you mean about being bored. I don’t make a good patient, I do a caregiver, but hate to accept help for some reason!!! Keep us posted, as you always do.
Hugs (not a tight one, dont’ want to hurt you!)
Cindy
Wow, I’m so relieved to hear that it’s working. God IS good.
Yes God is good. And your wonderful attitude makes all the difference. Went thru chemo and cancer with my husband a year ago and laughed at your bread and balsamic vinegar! He probably would have liked that! That’s the hard part..eating..try instant breadfast..full of protein
and the milk is full of calcium! Praying for you, you are doing good!
Wonderful news……! You are so right GOD IS GOOD! Keep getting stronger everyday and I look forward to your inspiring ideas!
Hallelujah! God is good!

Good news at last! So good to hear. Thinking of you as you get through chemo.
Hooray! Hooray!
God does answer prayers. “Ask and you shall receive”!
Oh Hooray!!!!! Wonderful news.
So glad to hear your good news! Also if you get too nauseated from chemo they can give you something to relieve that! Be sure to tell your doctor or your father in law when something doesn’t feel right. This is no time to play the stoic mother who can deal with anything! 🙂 You will get back to that once you are through treatment! When I would get bored or feel guilty for not helping around the house, my husband would always tell me my only job was to to get well.
So elated at this good news! Keep up the positivity. You are an amazing inspiration to others!
Praise God for your good results. Will continue to pray that you and your family know His comfort and lavish grace in your lives. Big hugs, Clarex

Great news Ashley. I must say you continue to be an inspiration. We are all lucky to have a connection to you. Being Lisa’s mother in law, I already know how special she is and I thank God, that she is in your life, and that you are in hers. You have so many prayers continuing for you. Keep getting strong. I thank you for the daily updates, cause you are on my mind so much. God Bless You. Cuppy
That is the best news ever :). Was so relieved to read this post. Been checking whenever I could about your blood test results.
Will keep thinking and praying for you & your family. Take care and hope you’re up for a donut soon :).
Stick this little tip in the back of your mind…if you have to take Leupotron shots ( I may have butchered the spelling) to stimulate your blood counts take a Claritin at the time of the injection. Not sure if you’ll have to have those shots but they cause incredible long bone pain.
I’m a nurse. It helped my husband during his chemo. I heard about it from a lady who had just taken chemo for breast cancer. I’ve shared this with other chemo patients and they say it really helps. Just an FYI, just in case.
Wonderful news! So happy for you and your family.
Praise the Lord Ashley!! Such wonderful news 🙂
I’m so happy for the good news! Prayer is so powerful. God is very good…
So happy to hear the great news. I am very happy for you Ashley. I hope your appetite comes back. Every time I see a donut, I think of you. On a side note…..I grew up around donuts, my parents owned a donut shop and my dad was usually the baker.

Hi Ashley,
I am very moved by this post. I am battling health issues right now but nothing serious. I am taking preventive measures right now. I would encourage you to look into eating raw foods to help with your sickness. I found these documentaries helpful; Dying to have known, Fork over Knives, and Food Matters. You can stream them on Netflix. You can find clips on You Tube.
I am just trying to get this message out to as many people because changing my diet has really helped me. I feel so much better. I am blogging about my journey too. I hope and pray for the best for you.
Tina

Oh Ashley, I’m behind on my reader and just got caught up to date on this. I’m thinking of you and sending lots of good health wishes your way girl! Stay strong…I’ve undergone a lot of physical problems with an illness and like to say that “god only gives us what he can think we can handle so you must be one tough cookie. You’re so strong you’re a bag of chocolate chips!” So go kick that cancer’s ass and beat it down! Giant hugs and if you need to talk or vent about anything you send an email my way 🙂 xoxoxoxo We can compare our tummy battle scars 😛
I am so happy for your good news and wish you a continuing speedy recovery ~ You are quite the woman 🙂
Sending you good wishes my friend! I’m glad to see that things are getting better. Even little bits of good news (like being able to sit in front of a computer!) mean so much at this point. Praying for you daily!! Love, A
