I bought this pair of shoes at a consignment sale for Boo last year and her shoelaces kept coming untied so often that I decided to replace the laces with elastic. The colorful elastic below is just fold-over elastic (FOE) used for hairbands and other crafts:
Foldover Elastic comes in a wide array of colors:
You can also use lingerie elastic for a cute, girly look:
I used white scalloped lingerie elastic for Boo’s school shoes so that she match uniform policy:
Great for toddlers, youth and adults. I don’t always feel like tying my own shoes……

Thank you, thank you, thank you Ashley. I have a 7 year old with weakness in his fingers/hands and I am struggling to find shoes for school with velcro. Now I can buy him shoes with laces and just replace them with elastic. I have been worrying about how I was going to overcome this challenge. Thank you for posting your fabulous ideas. Love from Australia xo

I did this same thing for my son’s P.E. shoes – up until now we have used plimsolls with velcro closures, but he has such wide feet we have struggled to get them to fit. Lace ups fit him better, but he can’t reliably do them up, so I swapped out the laces for elastic – dull old black in this case though.
