Snow on the Hill

There’s snow on the Hill this morning. Sometimes it feels like there is an umbrella over downtown Bryson City. Maybe it has to do with the layout of the gorges and rivers and the surrounding mountain, but often there can be a huge snowfall five miles out in either direction, and there will be nothing where we are.  This was the view from our living room two days ago when my phone said it was snowing:

I think the forecast would be more accurate if I just linked up to another city instead of the local weather. I think I might have jinxed us when I bought that new sled a few weeks ago for “Blizzard 2016” (which brought zero snow to our hill).

Last night I did hear the snowplows on either side of our hill which meant only one thing: snow was accumulating. I can’t even explain how much I love the feeling of laying in my warm bed knowing that the landscape is filling up with flurries. So we did wake up to a little bit of snow this morning. You can see the historic old courthouse to the left right past the birdhouse on our tree. And “Schoolhouse Hill” on the right side:

And today is another snow day off from school. People laugh at the South for shutting down over an inch of snow but it’s just not safe for school buses to travel around these winding roads and steep hills with precious cargo. Instead we hunker down, start a fire in the fireplace and spend some quality time indoors.

We fed the birds extra today and I even caught sight of our elusive cardinal that pays a visit every once in a while. It’s still 21 degrees here and it’s almost lunchtime. It’s nice not to have to venture outside. If I move an extra heater to the basement I can paint peacefully by myself while Boo putters around upstairs with Max. It’s actually pretty cozy for being a basement room. I just need to move a comfy armchair in:
