We’ve almost made it through the first week! If you haven’t started yet….join in! The daily prompts are just to give you some inspiration….you can work in your journal whenever you have time or feel inspired….maybe that’s once a week or maybe it’s 3 times a day. It’s up to you. I’ve received a ton of questions on how long this journal project will last…..for now it’s open ended. I’ll try to keep the prompts coming daily (and they are getting their own dedicated archive page soon so you won’t have to search for them). You might just have to forgive me here or there if life gets in the way of a day…..
I’m mixing it up a little today….let’s work on handwriting over the weekend! I love to try and alter my handwriting from page to page in my journal. I’ve even seen my handwriting change over time because of it. It challenges me to add in a little creativity….and adds interest from page to page. Print out the PDF or just save the image below to your computer, phone or iPad for on-the-go “font” inspiration. When you are writing in your journal today and over the weekend try out some new lettering……

This is fun. My brother says that he can tell what kind of mood I’m in by my handwriting. We write eachother all the time. He actually requested hand-written letters instead of typed letters because its more personal. It’ll be neat to write over the weekend and see how my writing changes and try to remember how I felt when I wrote. See if it really does change depending on my mood.

Penmanship really is becoming a lost art! I love anything older than the 1950’s, and seeing letters, documents, etc. from the Titanic/Teens era, Edwardian, Victorian, and so on makes me want to improve my handwriting! Especially with the flourishes they would add to their signatures! *Sigh* Even just thinking about it is making me want to grab my journal and perfect the Edwardian writing style TODAY! Once I get that down, I may even try it out with my quill pen or glass dip-pens! Thank you Ashley for inspiring me to do this today! 🙂

I was horrified to find out that they dont even teach cursive writing in school anymore…at least thats the way it is in the school system in Chicago, where I am from. Can you even believe that???!! This girl is just having a hard time adjusting to this new world we live in. It makes me sad that kids dont write letters anymore. It was just our 7th wedding anniversay the other day and I pulled out a journal my husband and I used to keep when we met, we wrote in it every day to eachother and left it under our pillows. We met working at Cedar Point amusemnet park in ohio. We worked there over the summer and lived in dorm rooms. This is such a sweet, fun project your doing Ashley. 😉

They don’t teach cursive?!?!?! I started learning cursive in 3rd grade! Sometimes I just dislike technology! It has made communication a lost art! I’ve literally seen two people sitting next to each other TEXTING the person sitting next to them. I have actually decided to write actual letters to people rather than emailing or texting. And I’m only 19!

I never learned cursive! (I’m 24). They didn’t teach it at my school, and in about 4th grade we started taking computer typing classes, and stopped focusing on handwriting. In college, all of our papers are typed, as are most of our assignments, so my handwriting is simply awful. I can barely read my lecture notes!
I never realized that I could practice my penmanship and that it would get better… I’m going to go start now!!

Thank you for the prompts. I realized the last time I worked in my journal was last November. Can you throw in prompts once in awhile even after you’re done with the “journal project”? It will help me keep on task.
Katie Mac says
On the subject of penmanship though… Both of my girls are learning the Spaulding method. The hand writing is as important as learning to read. They learn cursive in 3rd grade. They keep calling me out on my handwriting!

Ohhh! I’m so exited to do this! I’ve kept journals since I was 12 (or so). As I’ve gotten older, I tend to put it aside and not make the time it write. I love your prompts and am anxious to get going. Thank you! And thanks for that awesome post from the 1960 dear Abby…so true!!

I think the journal has to have an eavesdropping page to go with the people watching…things we overhear people say on their cellphones or to their children are often funny and entertaining and can immediately take us back to a specific place and time… Every once in a while you could take the best of them and put them in a blog post.

It has taken be a while to figure out what to do with this. But now that I have gotten started I am having so much fun trying out different styles of handwriting, making the use of different colors and different “fonts,” and slowly learning to loosen up.

Thank you so much for posting these prompts. I jumped on board with the Lil Journal Project this weekend and really enjoyed participating. I can’t wait to get started with today’s map!

I’m usually really bad at keeping a journal, but your prompts make it so much fun. Cant wait to keep writing (: Thanks for all the great ideas!

This is SOOOOO wonderful! Thank you, Ashley, for inspiring me, as always. I’ve been struggling with whether to start journaling again as I face my struggle with anxiety and depression, and I need outlets of good memories and fun projects, so this is PERFECT. I just caught up on days 1, 2, 3 and 5, and tomorrow I hope to do 4, 6 and 7. I was away when this started and can’t wait to be on track! And then add my own. Thank you again!
