Boo: I need a new bed.
Me: What’s wrong with your bed?
Boo: The design….the whole design is just scary.
Me: Scary?
Boo: Yes….the poles have eyes….and huge teeth. They watch me.
Me: What if we just imagine they are cupcakes?
Boo: Won’t work. People see things in different ways you know.
Point taken. I see them now. And I think the eyes are watching me too.
Time for a new bed.
Boo: I’d like to keep my sheets though.
We’ve had an issue with eyes today. While I was teaching VBS today a little boy raised his hand and asked:
Why is the mouse dead on your dress?
He’s right. The mouse does look dead. Now Boo wants to know why the mouse is dead. I don’t have an answer for that.
I also don’t have an answer for this conversation that took place in the car:
Boo: Why does God make bad things?
Me: He doesn’t make bad things…I think it’s about free will. Because we are free to do what we want….bad things can happen.
Boo: But that doesn’t explain tornadoes….

I actually see an owl. A round circle around the owl eyes.

She is right, totally looks like little skeleton heads looking at you 🙁 what a smart cookie you have on your hands!

Oh, she is wise beyond her years. Can’t wait to see the new bed because I am sure it is going to be “Boo-riffic”. PS. We have always called our 8 year old Boo {nicer than Surprise} and he has requested for us to not call him that anymore. When I asked what he wanted to be called he replied “Mr. President”.
Jen says
Maybe paint the bed white and string some pretty colored ribbon or tulle around the poles?? That might take the scariness out of it.

That girl is way too smart! Love it 🙂

I see it too! LOL
(Keep it) I kinda reminds me of the skulls with the flowers, she might start to love skulls and think it’s cool when she is 9 or 10…..and the comment about the dress is really funny!!

creepy bed & totally dead mice, that’s hysterical !
tornadoes & cancer & babies getting sick and dying & all those yucky things that feel like God could prevent are so hard to explain to kids. I explain to my kids {& adults & myself} that we aren’t living in God’s plan, right now we are part of the broken sinful world, Eden was His plan, perfection. Then sin entered the world and Satan came to turn us from God. God doesn’t cause pain {he’s a God of love not pain and chaos}, but he does allow Satan to test & tempt us. God will walk with us through the pain and loss. When people say, “oh this is part of God’s plan,” I cringe because I know my God is the God of creation, the God of Love, the one that hurt so much for His people that He sent His son to take away our sins! Yuck happens because we aren’t living in His plan anymore, His plan was destroyed the second sin entered the world, God’s plan is not pain and brokenness, it’s love and redemption and beauty. and the end to my mini sermon!

I heard a mom once say to a little boy – when something bad happens, like a tornado, look at all the people that come out to help. That is where you will find God. Even as an adult it made me feel better.
K G Palmer says
Boo, those of us in Oklahoma ask that question all the time!!!!
K G Palmer says
Regarding the bed why not make a padded head & foot board slip cover or a crib rail guard that ties with ribbons. A great patterned fabric that she helped choose might be just the distraction you need!

My 4 yr old grandson and I just removed everything from his room that had eyes or even an implication of eyes because he couldn’t sleep with them watching him! Definitely time for a new bed!
Lola says
Sounds like it’s time to go back to Genesis 3, were sin enters the world and how things started to go wrong and now we get to choose between right and wrong. And Genesis 6 The flood, (to explain tornados) the earth is still recovering from the flood.

I was wondering how to comment on the tornado question and I remembered I had just pinned a sermon on the topic on Pinterest so I decided to watch it….playing it now….4:30 am … WOW!! Worth watching!!! Dead mice…oh my…that is just too funny!

The “why make bad things” is a big topics in our house too. The best answer I have found is from the movie “Oh God.” John Denver’s character asks the same thing. God’s reply was “he could never figure out how to make a front without a back.”

John Piper has some good articles on suffering in the world, and how God is involved. Her’s a link to one, and you can search for related articles – http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/taste-see-articles/tsunami-sovereignty-and-mercy.
Obviously not reading for a 5 year old, but I have found his teaching helpful for explaining and answering those big questions 🙂

Love the matching dresses! Do you remember where you purchased them from? I struggle to find something like this in Australia 😉
