Our power was out yesterday…..almost all day. There was some type of equipment failure down the street. It was actually a really nice day without any distractions. I finished a book and read most of a new one, Mr. LBB went for a long bike ride, Boo played “college” with her dolls. I’m starting to think the Little House on the Prairie life would be more and more attractive to us (plus occasional Wi-Fi of course).
I started reading this book Once Upon a Flock yesterday and haven’t put it down. It’s chicken non-fiction. A memoir. Lauren Scheuer writes about her addition of a small flock of chickens to her family…..writing about how she takes care of them, the personalities each chicken takes on, etc.
Her little illustrations are so endearing and the stories made me tear up and laugh at the same time. It’s a fun book to read your kids too because of all the photos and drawings she includes.
It’s a sweet mixture of Charlotte’s Web meets James Herriot meets “you’ll want to raise chickens now.” It made me reflect on our own family pet Diesel and how much there is to love and observe about a tiny animal…….and how much they can teach us about ourselves. And it made me think of Mr. LBB who just 2 days ago tried to save a bird that ran into our window with chest compressions. He wasn’t able to save the poor bird but he did give him an honorable burial.
And guess what I just told Mr. LBB……I want to raise chickens now.
Just wanted to share that today.
]P.S. Lauren has a blog called Scratch and Peck that her book is based on.

I have spent the last 1 1/2 hours reading Lauren’s blog! Definitely makes me want chickens. I think my cockatiel may object though….she loves all the attention! I am going her book for my nieces ….great Christmas gift to put in the stocking and read on Christmas break. Thanks Ash for the great referral!

This blog was enough to make me want to read it! Raising chickens might be a lot of work, but it’d be worth it to have the eggs (that you know exactly where they came from and what those chickens have been fed).

We got some chickens last year. 15 of them! They were all supposed to be hens. Turns out 1 was a rooster. Well, all you need is one rooster to have a whole bunch of chicks! So far we have hatched and sold about 75 chicks. And we always have eggs to eat and give to friends. It has been a great hobby and a fun way to teach the littles some responsibility and some business practices too (ie: you can’t incubate any more eggs if you have no outlet for the little chicks). We have had more fun than I thought possible with our little flock. The only bad part is when one of them dies, but there is a lesson there too. I will have to get that book.

I loved this book so much, I’m now reading it to my 11 year old son who is loving it so much he’s offered up his clubhouse for a coop. We’re making big plans for our own rag tag flock!
