I really do live in Mayberry. i.e. Bryson City
This is Buford’s Barbershop. He waved at me each time I walked by today.
A store that sells guns and ice cream:
The view from Main Street and Everett Street:
Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. We need hours of aimless wandering, or spates of time sitting on park benches, observing the mysterious world of ants and the canopy of treetops.

If you REALLY want to visit Mayberry…you aren’t that far. Just head up to Mt Airy. They even have a Mayberry Days (complete with Barney). You can grab a quick bite at the Snappy Lunch or get a trim at Floyd’s Barber Shop. You’ll see Mt. Pilot (Pilot Mountain) on the way.

I am glad you have found peace in your new home. But how is selling guns along with ice cream a way of “withdrawing from cares”? Ever since I read of your sheriff attending revival meetings, then running road blocks at night, I have been feeling lots of cares about your new home. How does one remain unbiased in such an environment. Sorry to bring this up, but it’s been really bugging me.

I don’t really understand the question. Unbiased against what? I’m just grateful to be here. I’m sorry that it bugs you.

Blue Bell Ice Cream is the best! Homemade Vanilla is my favorite of all time! Hope you’ve tried it 🙂

Make sure you try the Blue Bell Ice Cream! It is the best ever. I live about 90 miles from the creamery where it’s made and I still can’t get enough of it. Glad you’re settling into your new home so well!

There’s something about smaller towns. The pace, the vibe… I no longer fear turning left. (weird but true) We moved from a larger densely populated city to a much smaller town. While it doesn’t have the quaint Main St. I’m surrounded by at least 3-4 even smaller towns that does. I LOVE it. Oh and a few of them have the BEST bakeries ever!!!

Hi Ashley,
I’ve really been enjoying your posts from “A Year at the Inn”. How do you manage to find the best quotes? Do you have a collection of favorites that you pull from? Which comes first the quote or the post?
I copy favorite quotes on scraps of paper, margins of journals, notebooks, napkins, but I can never seem to find one when I’m looking for it. Of course, it’s fun to find them at random, in places where I forgot I put them too. Little reminders from when I first found the quote.
Anyway, just wondering if you have a system…clearly I’m a reading/writing nerd.
Thanks for sharing your journey!
All the best, Kristin

I’m all over the place! Sometimes I start writing about a quote….other times I randomly add it after just growing my journal. Sometimes the quote has nothing to do with what the post is about! I guess the answer is no system… and sometimes I just strike out 🙂
