Henrietta is one of our Barred Rock Bantams. She’s a character:
Henrietta really does just pop up out of nowhere. Sometimes I’ll open up the garage door and she’ll just be standing there staring, as if she’s been waiting for me. Other times she just runs across the yard as if she’s a neighbor trying to wave me down, her head bobbing as if she really wants to fill me in on some juicy, emergency flock gossip. “Did you hear?!”
The other day I took our dog Max for a walk and I shoo’d her away so that she wouldn’t follow us. She stood at the edge of the gravel drive and watched us disappear up the hill. I decided to take the long route around the hospital which enters our property from the opposite side. We were gone quite some time and when we finally got around to the other side I heard some rustling in the woods. All the sudden Henrietta appeared, peeking around a tree with an expression on her face like, “Hey! Fancy meeting you guys here!” Then she crept timidly towards us as if she was holding in her excitement. I felt both flattered and afraid all at the same time.
I do wonder if her farsightedness is just a Clark Kent disguise. She can’t seem to pick up any food out of my hand when I feed it to her…she does this dramatic swoop-and-miss, a flustered fumble just like when Clark drops his glasses. But then she’s able to find me anywhere on the property within seconds. And then there’s that one jade green feather that sticks out of her back. It’s almost the color of Kryptonite. Maybe it’s her human radar.
I can’t wait to figure out what her superpowers are.
Henrietta is a Barred Rock chicken born on March 27, 2016. She is a bantam breed which means she is smaller than the regular sized chicken. She lays tiny brown eggs and loves cool weather. She loves to steal birdseed and earth worms from our resident robin population. You can read more about our flock here.
