Our power was out yesterday…..almost all day. There was some type of equipment failure down the street. It was actually a really nice day without any distractions. I finished a book and read most of a new one, Mr. LBB went for a long bike ride, Boo played “college” with her dolls. I’m starting to think the Little House on the Prairie life would be more and more attractive to us (plus occasional Wi-Fi of course).
I started reading this book Once Upon a Flock yesterday and haven’t put it down. It’s chicken non-fiction. A memoir. Lauren Scheuer writes about her addition of a small flock of chickens to her family…..writing about how she takes care of them, the personalities each chicken takes on, etc.
Her little illustrations are so endearing and the stories made me tear up and laugh at the same time. It’s a fun book to read your kids too because of all the photos and drawings she includes.
It’s a sweet mixture of Charlotte’s Web meets James Herriot meets “you’ll want to raise chickens now.” It made me reflect on our own family pet Diesel and how much there is to love and observe about a tiny animal…….and how much they can teach us about ourselves. And it made me think of Mr. LBB who just 2 days ago tried to save a bird that ran into our window with chest compressions. He wasn’t able to save the poor bird but he did give him an honorable burial.
And guess what I just told Mr. LBB……I want to raise chickens now.
Just wanted to share that today.
]P.S. Lauren has a blog called Scratch and Peck that her book is based on.
