Sometimes I’ll venture out in the morning for a donut and diet coke and 2 hours later I make it back with a few extra items….I can easily get side tracked into the small thrift stores nearby. Everyone thinks I often spend too much on some items….but I can’t pass some things up!
A flour sifter to hold pens and paintbrushes
An old globe to start teaching Boo geography. First lesson: Iraq where her Uncle Gene is stationed right now.
A vintage necklace that caught my eye:
I picked up a pack of lace doilies from the dollar store (99 cent store) and made this gardenia-inspire hair clip for Boo.
These doilies came in a pack of three:
I took each doily and folded it in half:
Then created a fan shape by scrunching up the bottom:
Then I sewed the bottom part of the “fan” shape to a small piece of felt:
I took the other 2 doilies and repeated the same steps but placed them on the felt in opposite directions:
After each doily was sewn to the felt, I trimmed any excess felt off:
I took scissors and cut into the doily to help it fan out more and trimmed pieces that I thought were too large:
I used a needle and thread to add a few stitches in areas I thought needed to be tacked down a little:
Finally I used a glue gun to attach my doily flower to a clip. You could attach it to a head band if you prefer too!
So dainty and pretty. You could add a vintage pearl button if you want in the middle but I wanted it plain and pretty:

While at my sister’s wedding, I set aside one morning to visit Mary Jo’s in Gastonia, NC. I have loved exploring this place ever since I was a little girl. Mary Jo’s is celebrating 58 years this year!
Mary Jo is still there everyday….you can see her in the below photo (black sweater):
Anybody else been there? If you live nearby it is worth the drive…..the prices are incredible! No tax if you let them ship it to you over state lines!
